Speech and Language Assessments

Assessment is likely to focus on a wide range of communication skills including non-verbal communication/ body language, verbal comprehension, expressive language, speech sounds, attention and listening skills, fluency and social skills. Assessment includes a case-history, informal observations of the child during social interaction and play (depending on age), and completion of a range of formal assessments where appropriate.

The purpose of assessment is to establish a child’s current communication strengths and needs, gather evidence that may lead to a more specific diagnosis, determine the need for and frequency and type of therapy required and provide a baseline from which measurable therapy targets can be set and future progress determined.

Once the assessment process is complete (this may take a few hours possibly on more than one occasion), a report will be compiled highlighting each child’s strengths and challenges and outlining recommendations, strategies and advice for the way forward. If required for medico-legal purposes such as a special educational needs tribunal, the assessment and report are likely to be highly detailed.

Parents will be invited to the centre to discuss the findings and treatment recommendations. A therapy programme will be devised taking into account available resources and the child and family’s individual circumstances. If the child requires OT or other therapies in conjunction with speech and language, the programme will be devised in collaboration with other Starjumpz therapists/associate specialists
