Pioneering services for children with learning, developmental, motor and behavioural challenges

Occupational Therapy Assessments

In order to develop a highly specific and individualised treatment plan, a variety of assessment techniques may be required. At Starjumpz we offer comprehensive OT assessment using a range of standardised tests and clinical observation. For some children this may include assessment of independence in daily living skills and for older children and young adults, life skills. This could require observation in the home, school or work environment as well as at the centre.

Our clinical observations include:

  • Assessment of postural control, muscle tone, reflexes, bilateral integration, balance, underlying developmental challenges, sensory system (including visual, auditory, tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular) and perceptual motor function
  • Assessment of motor planning, organisational ability and praxis
  • Assessment of fine and gross motor skills, including handwriting skills
  • Visual Motor Screening
  • Visual Perceptual Screening
  • Sensory profiling (especially valuable where there is poor attention or distractibility, sensitivity to touch, poor body position awareness, auditory processing difficulties, and behavioural difficulties.

Our standardised tests include:

  • Sensory Profiles
  • Sensory Processing Measure
  • Movement ABC 2 (Assessment Battery for Children)
  • Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency 2nd Edition
  • Beery Test of Visual Motor Integration
  • Motor Free Visual Perception Test
  • Miller’s Pre-School Assessment
  • Miller Functional Participation Scales
  • SIPT (Sensory Integration and Praxis Test)
  • DeGangi-Berk Test of Sensory Integration (TSI)
  • Quick neurological screening 2nd Edition
  • Draw a Person Test (DAP)
  • Dash Handwriting Assessment
  • ABAS (Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System 2)
  • Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Assessment Scales

Parents will be asked to complete a Parent Questionnaire and either a Sensory Profile Form or Sensory Processing Measure. This information is invaluable in gaining insight into how each child operates and behaves in the home environment. A Teacher Comment Form will also be sought in order to gain insight into children’s abilities and behaviour at school. A school version of the Sensory Processing Measure may also be incorporated.

Once the assessment process is complete (this may take a few hours on more than one occasion), a report will be compiled highlighting each child’s strengths and challenges and outlining therapeutic recommendations, strategies and advice for the way forward. If required for medico-legal purposes such as a special educational needs tribunal, the assessment and report are likely to be highly detailed.

Parents will be invited to the centre for an appointment to discuss the findings of the report and any treatment recommendations. A therapy programme will be devised taking into account available resources and the child and family’s individual circumstances. If the child requires speech and language therapy or other therapies in conjunction with OT, the programme will be devised in collaboration with other relevant Starjumpz therapists/associate specialists.
